Vanitas by kalicothekat Vanitas by kalicothekat
Edit: 10/4/08: new photo :)

Vanity of vanities; all is vanity!

I wasn't sure if I was going to upload this...but why not XD.

A still life using my newest purchase: a replica, plaster human skull 8D! When thinking of compositions, I remembered one of my favorite art movements, the Vanitas (see [link] for more details). I decided to do a more modern take on one of those paintings XD.

They often had wine glasses, watches, and musical instruments to symbolize the shortness of life and other such depressing things; instead, I have a Starbucks cup, a digital clock, and an iPod XD. The candles and skull, as well as the dark color scheme, are there to provide a link to the Veritas paintings.

I used a student grade canvas (about 20 x 24, I think?) on accident...a mistake I'll never make again |D. REALLY bad grain D:. It made my life hell while painting this~

And for some reason, the photo came out a LOT blacker than it really is. Actually, I didn't even use any black--just burnt umber (brown) and ultramarine blue XD. The Starbucks logo didn't photograph well either, but man that was complex/fun.
....Maybe I'll retake the photo someday soon.

Acrylics (also a mistake--should've used oils u_u)
Manyyyy hours

Picture is © to me. Please do not use, period.

Awesome pic :)
If you don't mind, could I use this as an example in my GCSE art project? I'll credit you, obviously.

Nice work :)
For my A level film/photo project, we have to research vanitas and find artists and pieces based on that theme. It would be great if you wouldn't mind letting me stick this in my book as an example :)
Of course you will be credited; we have to list artists and places where we have found work, they like to see a good variety.
Thanks :)

'tis fun how it's a play on a classic theme, using modern items 8D
And I like how the light is refletgin on things, like the clock on the iPod, I always found that difficult haha =p

Definitely took a peek at Mera's comment up there, and her insight reminds me of why I choose to be a writer :3

Still lifes are just one of those things artists have to continually do so they can peg their observation and translation (eye to hand to media) skills pat. Your color blending seems to be your strongest point -- I think it defines a lot of what you do. Uh, follow Mera's advice and keep it up! :D

I really like the composition on this - the new tech and the old items (or the old appearing items) mix together in kind of a new-age ish blend of old ideas. I like!

Keep it up =)

this is wicked :D i love the shading :) and even though the materials were hard to work with, i dont think it shows much at all :) and im with death-pony7 about the colours :) i see them as you describe them too, but i have been through similar experienses myself in a way. some of my photograps are really dark and hard to make out on some screens, while on others i feel like i can actually see what im working with -even though its a little dark :)

I love this! I think you use acrylics incredibly well :3 Why do you prefer oils (just curious)? I know they're supposed to be nicer for blending and all but fjdk they sound intimidating and unforgiving to me fff since you can just paint over mistakes with acrylic ;_;

THIS IS SERIOUSLY AMAZING THOUGH, I find your stuff really inspiring!

awww thank you so much Sarya ;; <333 YOUR STUFF IS INCREDIBLE AS WELL. I really want to free up my use of color and looking at your amazing art makes me BELIEVE <333333.
And THAT IS TRUE. All of what you said is true 8D;. HOWEVER, oils look a looooot richer. They just have a certain luminosity or something? They're a LOT better for blending, and the colors are just...idk, nicer XD. But the one problem I keep having is that my colors get overworked and muddy and there's nothing I can do for a week to fix them (till they dry slightly) xD. That's a big problem, but one I'm working on trying to avoid 8D;.

I'D BE SO AFRAID OF THAT HAPPENING. Ahaha my problem is I don't make my colors harmonize and everything ends up being ALL OVER THE PLACELOL but thanks so much for the compliment ; ; I loove how skilled you are with a wide variety of mediums, I wish more people were like that cause
as much as I love digital art, I'd love to see more traditional paintings from people I stalk.

I thought I did too, before this painting xD, but I've been doing an oil landscape class and I'm beginning to really appreciate them O:. Watercolors are still my fave medium by far, but I can't decide between acrylics and oils. They're so different--it's so neat!
Thank you so much!

I use turpenoid, so it's odorless so I don't know what the heck I'm breathing in 8D. YAY!

Why is cheap canvas marked student grade... :paranoid: They should get the best quality to bolster confidence!

This is a really cool juxtaposition. Congrats on pulling it off with subpar materials!

Haha! I totally agree! The weaving on this canvas is awful x_x. It has like...gaps between the fibers D8...and the colors won't soak in so easily! So before I fixed it, it had a ton of tiny white dots D:. SADNESS.
Oh well, I got it for free~so, I guess beggars can't be choosers XD.
Thank you!

I really, really love the skull here! Now, with all of these, they look really good individually (although the starbucks cup looks like the ellipsis might be off...) but my biggest qualm is that... nothing seems to be entirely grounded, or all put together. I see the shadows, but they still almost seem to float a little. It is really good, though.

Thank you so much for the crit! I totally agree with you--something has felt really off since I decided to stop painting it. It's not quite finished in my eyes, but I couldn't see what else to do--maybe a break and a DA post was what I needed XD.
I really want to go back into it and define those shadows further (especially since the still life is still set up in the corner of my "art studio" of sorts XD). The table they're on is reflective, and I tried to capture that, but I think I lost a lot of the shadows.
The cup gave me so much trouble XD. Which part looks off to you? The top or the bottom =P? I'll try to fix it ! :D

I loove how you caught the reflection under the ipod, actually. I think the hard thing with reflections is that you have to understand that the color is probably not the same color you used in the above one, but probably a strange lilac or yellow. I was always hit with having my high lights too white. The key, apparently is to ping down all the colors, even very vague ones (like a purple white as compared to a yellow white)
For the cup, it just doesn't look straight and crisp. It could be the photo, but the edges seem to curl inward, and the bottom ellipsis seem to point in different ways. See how the top one looks like you're looking at the cup downward from the direct center, while the bottom one doesn't seen centered under it. For the shadows, (since you said you're using burnt umber and ultramarine) try and get more of that blue into the darker shadows, and try pulling in any other color in your still life. Also, the candle in the back feels like it should be darker than the things in the foreground. I think with it's ligther value it almost wants to pop above the foreground. Squint your eyes and you notice how it could be sitting on top of the clock. Maybe darken it a little just so it feels farther away.

I'm still loving that skull, though x3

Oh man, that was SO helpful. Thank you so much!!! I'll definitely go back into this--why not XD. That's so true about the back candle--I hadn't noticed before but it's so glaringly bright/obvious that I can't believe I hadn't realized before XD.
As for the cup, the photo IS hurting it--the edges are a lot crisper, but you're very right about the ellipsis and co. =P
Thanks again for typing all that up ;;. You're the best!

when I looked at the thumbnail of this painting, I was like "What is that? An iPod and starbucks next to a skull?" But, now after reading the description, it makes much more sense. I appreciated reading about your struggles because I am having a hard time learning how to paint... it always seems so easy when you see someone else do it. But anyway, I like the painting. The lighting from the candles is very nice, and so are your details, like the reflection of the time on the iPod. I like i like.

:D I'm glad my description helped! This is one painting that definitely needs an explanation, or at least a descriptive title XD.
Thank you so much! And yeah, painting isn't as easy as some make it out to be, sadly :(. I wish it was XD.
But keep at it ! It can be taxing at times, but it's really rewarding. And sometimes the problem-solving aspect of painting can be the most fun of all--at least when you solve the problems, that is .
